While the Centre has adopted a cautious approach towards new hydroelectric projects in the upper reaches of the Ganga River in Uttarakhand, it continues to promote large-scale hydropower development in Arunachal Pradesh.
Recently, approval was granted for the 1,720 MW Kamala Hydroelectric Project and the 1,200 MW Kalai-II Hydroelectric Project. The 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project has already commenced operations, while the 2,880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Project—India’s tallest dam project at 278 metres—is scheduled for completion by 2032.
The projects have intensified discussions on balancing energy security, infrastructure development and environmental concerns in the ecologically sensitive Himalayan region.
