Supreme Court Justice Ujjal Bhuyan supported appointing “distinguished jurists” as Supreme Court judges to bring greater diversity, expertise and scholarly perspectives to the Bench.
Article 124(3)(c) of the Constitution permits such appointments. However, Justice Bhuyan noted that in the 76 years since Independence, no distinguished jurist has been appointed directly to the Supreme Court under this provision.
