Section 126(1)(b) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 prohibits the display or broadcast of election-related content through television, radio or similar media during the 48-hour silence period before polling ends. This restriction ensures that voters are not influenced at the final stage of elections.
Media platforms must avoid airing any programme, debate or opinion that could favour or prejudice any candidate or party, including opinion polls.
Further, under Section 126A, the conduct and publication of exit polls are banned between 7:00 AM on April 9, 2026 and 6:30 PM on April 29, 2026. Violations can lead to imprisonment up to two years, fine, or both.
APSC Relevance: Important for election laws, Model Code of Conduct and electoral integrity.
