A study by Chinese geologists has identified an active fault line beneath China’s proposed Brahmaputra hydropower project in Tibet, raising concerns about the structural stability of the world’s largest planned hydropower project. The project is located close to the India–China border near Arunachal Pradesh, making it strategically significant for downstream regions.
The researchers warned that fractures in the Earth’s crust in the Eastern Himalayan seismic zone could affect the long-term safety of the dam infrastructure, raising questions over its resilience to earthquakes and its potential implications for downstream disaster risks.
