The Assam Uniform Civil Code Bill 2026 is a 153-page legislation divided into four parts dealing with Marriage and Divorce, Succession, Live-in Relationships and Miscellaneous provisions.
Under the section on live-in relationships, the Bill makes registration compulsory for partners residing within Assam, irrespective of whether they are permanent residents of the state. Residents of Assam living in live-in relationships outside the state may also register with the appropriate Sub-Registrar.
The Bill further provides that any child born from a live-in relationship shall be treated as a legitimate child of the couple, granting legal recognition and protection to such children.
