N. S. Raja Subramani has been appointed as India’s new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), succeeding Anil Chauhan after completion of his tenure in May 2026.
The CDS is the highest-ranking military officer in India and serves as the Principal Military Adviser to the Defence Minister on tri-services matters. The CDS also functions as Permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee and Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs. The office promotes coordination, integration and jointness among the Army, Navy and Air Force.
