Assam remains one of the major states affected by human-elephant conflict in India, contributing to the nearly 500 annual human deaths linked to elephant encounters across the country. Expanding settlements, habitat fragmentation and increasing interaction between humans and wildlife have intensified the problem in several regions of the State.

Reports also indicate that Anti-Depredation Squads in Assam have sometimes led to accidental elephant deaths during panic-driven operations. To address such conflicts, the Ministry of Environment has initiated Regional Action Plans for the North-East focusing on landscape-level wildlife management and conservation strategies.
