Assam-based conservationist Dr Purnima Devi Barman, popularly known as the “Stork Sister,” received the Businessline Changemaker of the Year Award on September 22, 2026. The award recognises her sustained grassroots efforts to conserve the endangered Greater Adjutant Stork, locally known as Hargila.
The award ceremony, part of the eighth edition of the Changemaker event, recognised individuals and organisations contributing to social transformation across India. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman conferred the awards, highlighting the importance of community-driven initiatives in conservation and development.
