Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced Project Rhino, a dedicated initiative providing financial and technical support to states conserving the greater one-horned rhinoceros. It focuses on strengthening protection, improving habitats, conserving genetic diversity and scientifically monitoring population trends.
The initiative will cover major rhino-range states, including Assam, West Bengal and Bihar, while Uttar Pradesh has undertaken successful reintroduction in Dudhwa. A key priority is strengthening surveillance and anti-poaching measures, building on conservation strategies that have helped protected areas such as Kaziranga achieve periods without rhino poaching.
