The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a market-based flexibility mechanism established under Article 12 of the Kyoto Protocol. It enables developed countries with binding emission-reduction commitments to undertake projects that reduce greenhouse-gas emissions in developing countries.
Such projects generate Certified Emission Reduction (CER) credits, with each CER representing one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent. These credits can be used by eligible developed countries to meet part of their emission-reduction commitments under the Kyoto Protocol. CDM also promotes cleaner technologies and supports sustainable development in developing countries.
