The 248th edition of the Heikru Hidongba Festival was celebrated with traditional fervour at the Bijoy Govinda moat in Sagolband, Imphal West district. The festival features a traditional boat race that holds deep cultural and religious significance in Manipur.
First celebrated in 1779 during the reign of King Bheigyachandra, Heikru Hidongba is more than a sporting event. It is a sacred observance involving rituals performed to seek divine blessings for agricultural prosperity, abundance and the protection of the people of Manipur.
