Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, a South African human rights lawyer born in Durban in 1941, is known for her contributions to international justice and human rights. During apartheid, she defended anti-apartheid activists, including Nelson Mandela, and challenged discriminatory prison conditions.
Pillay served as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where landmark jurisprudence recognised sexual violence as an act of genocide under specific circumstances. She later served as a judge at the International Criminal Court and as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (2008–2014).
