The Das Magnitude Scale is a proposed earthquake magnitude scale developed to address inaccuracies associated with conventional magnitude measures, particularly for earthquakes below magnitude 7.5. Researchers used a unified catalogue of 9,968 earthquakes to compare the two approaches.
The study found that conventional earthquake measurements produced ground-motion estimates up to 40% higher than the Das Magnitude Scale at the 475-year hazard level, particularly for medium-sized earthquakes. The scale could improve seismic hazard assessment and earthquake-resistant infrastructure planning.
