A recent study published in the journal Climate Dynamics has examined moist heatwaves occurring during the Southwest Monsoon in several parts of India. The research finds that these events are closely linked to the active and break phases of the monsoon system. Scientists suggest that improved climate modelling can help predict such heatwaves two to four weeks in advance, supporting better disaster and public health preparedness.
Moist heatwaves differ from typical dry heatwaves as they combine high temperatures with elevated humidity levels. This reduces the human body’s ability to cool itself through sweating, making the conditions particularly dangerous for human health.
