Researchers at the ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun have developed an AI-based system for round-the-clock, non-intrusive monitoring of Mithun (Bos frontalis), the iconic “Cattle of the Hills”. The system uses 12 high-definition infrared CCTV cameras to observe animals during both day and night.
Trained on 3,000 annotated images, the technology identifies feeding, standing, lying and mounting behaviours. It combines YOLOv8n for behaviour detection with DeepSORT for tracking individual animals and maintaining their identities across video frames.
