Bangladesh’s interim government, headed by Muhammad Yunus, has announced the adoption of the July Charter, a joint declaration symbolizing the birth of a “new Bangladesh.” The charter emerged after extensive talks between the National Consensus Commission and various political parties.
The document contains over 80 reform proposals spanning governance, economy, and social justice. It is seen as a roadmap for rebuilding national institutions following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government in August 2024.
Ahead of the signing, the Commission amended the charter to grant indemnity to “July fighters”, who led the mass uprising. The revised text also described the Awami League as a “fascist regime” and condemned law enforcement officials accused of atrocities during the former government’s tenure.
