Over three decades after tigers disappeared from the State’s records, Gujarat has been officially recognised as a tiger-presence state for the 2026 national census.

The decision follows verified sightings in Ratanmahal Wildlife Sanctuary (Dahod). An official camera-trap survey will now be carried out along the Gujarat–Madhya Pradesh border to confirm movement and habitat use.

The development signals possible natural dispersal of tigers and highlights the importance of corridor protection and inter-state conservation cooperation.
