The Assam Government has announced a special push for makhana (fox nut) cultivation, citing the state’s favourable climate and the crop’s high economic potential. With annual rainfall ranging from 1,000–2,500 mm, most parts of Assam are considered suitable for its cultivation.
Described as a superfood, makhana offers farmers a high-value livelihood option, with a single bigha capable of generating an income of ₹40,000–₹50,000. The initiative aims to diversify agriculture and enhance farmers’ incomes.
