Internal Security and Human Rights
The 21st death anniversary of Pebam Chittaranjan Mangang, remembered as the “human torch,” was observed in Manipur. He self-immolated on August 15, 2004, in protest against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), symbolizing the deep resentment against the Act in the Northeast.
His sacrifice continues to inspire human rights movements and debates on balancing national security with democratic freedoms. It reflects the persistent demand in the region for a more humane and accountable security framework.
