The Union Ministry of Coal has empowered designated executives and security personnel of Coal India Limited (CIL), including the North Eastern Coalfields (NEC), to strengthen action against illegal mining, coal theft and unauthorised transportation of minerals.
The powers have been granted through Gazette notifications under Sections 22, 23B and 24 of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957. Authorised officials can now assist in detecting, preventing and reporting offences related to illegal extraction, mining and transport of coal and other minerals, thereby improving enforcement and resource governance.
