The Assam cabinet approved introduction of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill during the upcoming Assembly session. The government clarified that tribal communities and residents of hill areas would remain outside the scope of the proposed law to protect traditional customs and social practices.
According to the proposed framework, the UCC may include provisions relating to minimum marriage age, prohibition of polygamy, women’s property rights, regulation of live-in relationships and a uniform marriage age. The initiative is aimed at establishing common civil regulations while safeguarding protected cultural and religious traditions.
