The Indian Army is set to become the first armed force globally to field ramjet-powered artillery shells for its 155 mm guns. These are advanced projectiles equipped with an air-breathing ramjet propulsion unit, which allows the shell to keep generating thrust even after it leaves the barrel — unlike conventional rounds that simply glide after the initial blast.
By sustaining propulsion in flight, ramjet shells can travel farther and with greater accuracy, extending the effective range of standard 155 mm artillery by roughly 30–50%, without requiring any change to existing gun systems. They also enhance precision and strike effectiveness against high-value, distant targets.
