The Philippines has established Southeast Asia’s first coral larvae cryobank, designed to freeze and preserve coral “seeds” at ultra-low temperatures. This facility acts as a genetic seed vault for corals, ensuring their survival for future reef restoration and scientific research.
The initiative is part of the Coral Research & Development Accelerator Platform, a regional effort that includes the Philippines, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. By safeguarding coral biodiversity threatened by climate change and bleaching, the cryobank offers a vital tool for reviving degraded marine ecosystems.
