International Trade
Indonesia has halted imports of groundnuts from India citing aflatoxin contamination, drawing objections from exporters who flagged delayed notification and testing procedures that violate WTO norms. Aflatoxins are highly toxic secondary metabolites produced by fungi such as Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. These thrive in hot, humid conditions and can contaminate crops like groundnuts, maize, rice, spices, tree nuts, and even crude oils both pre- and post-harvest.
The suspension is a setback for India’s agricultural exports and highlights the rising scrutiny over food safety standards in global trade.
