Bangladesh’s interim Chief Advisor and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has sparked diplomatic tension after gifting a book containing a distorted map of Bangladesh to a Pakistani general.
The book, Art of Triumph: Bangladesh’s New Dawn, carried on its cover a map depicting India’s Assam and other Northeastern states as part of a so-called “Greater Bangladesh.”
The depiction aligns with expansionist ideas often promoted by radical groups and has caused unease in India’s diplomatic circles, particularly amid the recent warming of Dhaka–Islamabad relations since Yunus assumed office in August 2024.
This is not the first instance of Yunus making controversial remarks regarding India’s Northeast. Earlier in March, during a visit to China, he had suggested that Bangladesh could serve as the “gateway to the ocean” for the region, implying Chinese economic integration with India’s landlocked northeastern states.
