The year 2026 marks fifty years since India enacted the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976, a landmark law aimed at eliminating modern-day slavery and debt bondage. The Act abolished bonded labour, cancelled bonded debts, and criminalised practices that forced workers into exploitative labour arrangements.
Despite legal abolition, challenges remain in ensuring effective rehabilitation and social reintegration, as workers in sectors such as brick kilns, agriculture, and poultry farms continue to face debt-linked exploitation and informal coercion.
