The Ministry of Education, Government of India, has approved five Centres of Excellence (CoEs) for the study of classical Indian languages, including Classical Assamese. Tezpur University has been designated as the Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Assamese to strengthen academic research, digitisation, preservation and dissemination of its linguistic and literary heritage.
The other designated centres are Visva-Bharati University (Classical Bengali), Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute (Classical Marathi), Central University of Odisha (Classical Pali) and Central University of Gujarat (Classical Prakrit). The initiative aims to advance research and scholarship in these classical languages.
