Gunabhiram Barua wrote Ramnabami-Natak in 1857, regarded as the first social drama in Assamese literature. His writings addressed contemporary social issues, including women’s education and marriage reforms, reflecting the reformist currents of 19th-century Assam.

In 1887, he published Assam Buranji, which later became a school textbook and contributed to historical education in Assam. His humorous work, Kathin Shobdor Rohasya Bakhya, was published posthumously in 1912, further reflecting his literary versatility.
