Assam Police Day is observed annually on 1 October, commemorating the appointment of K.R. Choudhury, IP, as the first Indian Inspector General and head of Assam Police on 1 October 1951. The milestone marked the transition from colonial-era policing to Indian leadership.
Following the Treaty of Yandabo (1826), the British initially relied on the army for maintaining law and order before establishing the semi-military Levy. The Police Act, 1861, introduced in Assam in 1862, led to 11 police districts and branches including Civil, Frontier and Municipal Police.
