Bangladesh has announced that its 13th general election and a national referendum on the July National Charter will be held on February 12, 2026. The referendum marks a critical step in Bangladesh’s post-crisis political transition.

The July National Charter is a political declaration and reform blueprint drafted after the July 2024 mass uprising. Prepared through a process of national consensus, it involved the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus and around 30 political parties. The Charter proposes wide-ranging changes to the 1972 Constitution and the country’s governance framework.

Its core aim is to institutionalise democratic reforms following the 2024 movement, covering constitutional, electoral, administrative, and judicial reforms to reset Bangladesh’s political order.

APSC relevance: Important for India–Bangladesh relations, democratic transitions in South Asia, constitutional reform processes, and regional political stability.
