The Assam Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has decided to recommend a CBI investigation into the floods that affected Sivasagar and Charaideo districts in July 2026. The state government plans to send a formal request to the Centre within 10 days; the final decision on taking up the probe rests with the Centre and the CBI.

The proposed inquiry aims to establish the root causes of the flooding and examine whether human activities, environmental violations or administrative lapses contributed to the disaster. The CBI’s role would be to investigate any criminal dimensions, rather than the natural phenomenon of flooding itself.
