Gutka Ban Ignored: Rampant Use Continues

By Preetam/Preeti, The Assam Tribune

Despite the state government’s strict ban on Gutka and other chewing tobacco products, their illegal sale and consumption continue unabated. A visit to various markets and roadside stalls reveals that these products are being sold discreetly, often under the guise of general goods. Many vendors keep Gutka pouches hidden and sell them to regular customers upon request.

Consumers, particularly youth and daily wage workers, remain addicted, disregarding the health risks. Doctors warn that chewing tobacco leads to severe health issues, including oral cancer, gum diseases, and digestive disorders. Streets and public places are littered with Gutka-stained spittle, worsening sanitation and hygiene conditions.

Authorities claim they are taking action, but enforcement remains weak. Strict monitoring, heavy fines, and awareness campaigns are needed to curb this menace. Without effective implementation, the ban will remain merely on paper, and public health will continue to suffer.
