The slogan “Abua Raj” (our rule) was originally raised by Bhagwan Birsa Munda, the legendary tribal freedom fighter who mobilised indigenous communities against British colonial oppression. The call symbolised self-rule and the assertion of tribal identity and rights.

Recently, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren invoked a similar slogan, “Abua Dishum, Abua Raj,” at a public rally in Biswanath district of Assam on March 10 while addressing tea tribe and Adivasi communities ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. The slogan emphasised tribal empowerment and political representation.

APSC Relevance: Important for tribal movements, Birsa Munda’s legacy and contemporary political mobilisation among Adivasi communities.
