Researchers at IIT Guwahati have developed an eco-friendly biological approach to treat textile wastewater containing toxic azo dyes. The method could complement or provide an alternative to conventional chemical and physicochemical treatment processes.
The research identified Brevundimonas sp. AJZ05, a novel bacterium capable of degrading 98.50% of Direct Blue-6 (DB-6), a widely used synthetic dye. Importantly, the degradation products generated after bacterial treatment were found to be non-toxic, highlighting the potential of biological remediation for textile wastewater.
