The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) has completed 56 years, marking a significant milestone in Assam’s tea industry. Recognised as the world’s second-largest CTC tea auction platform by volume, GTAC has played an important role in strengthening Assam’s tea trade and market infrastructure.
The demand for a dedicated auction centre emerged in the 1960s, as Assam’s tea stakeholders sought to reduce dependence on Kolkata auctions. On 25 September 1970, R.G. Baruah conducted the first auction at the erstwhile Stadium Guest House, formally launching GTAC’s journey.
