A recent study by researchers from the Bose Institute found that air pollution levels across Northeast India have increased sharply over the last two decades, challenging the region’s reputation as one of India’s cleanest areas.
Using 25 years of satellite data (2000–2024), the study reported substantial increases in particulate matter (PM) pollution, with concentrations rising by more than 20% to nearly 50% depending on the pollutant. The research also recorded a nearly 50% increase in organic carbon aerosols, indicating a significant rise in smoke-related pollution across the region.
