Assam has urged the Centre to adopt the principle of “geographic equity” in public investment, highlighting the structural disadvantages faced by landlocked Northeastern states despite their strategic importance.

The state argued that investment decisions in geographically challenging regions should be assessed not only on expenditure efficiency but also on factors such as national integration, regional balance, and long-term competitiveness.

Assam continues to face logistical challenges due to its dependence on a narrow transport corridor, leading to higher freight and infrastructure costs compared to coastal states that benefit from ports and shorter supply chains.

The state also highlighted the Northeast’s transformation through improved connectivity, infrastructure development, lasting peace, and the implementation of the Act East Policy.

APSC Relevance: Regional development, balanced growth, Northeast connectivity, and public investment policy.
