Nitin Gadkari announced that 72 identified sinking zones on the National Highway 217 in Meghalaya will be developed with support from national and international experts at a cost of ₹160 crore.
A sinking zone (or subsidence zone) is an area where the ground gradually settles or sinks due to the removal, erosion, or compaction of subsurface materials. Such areas are highly vulnerable to landslides, ground instability, and infrastructure damage.
Expert guidance from institutions such as Indian Institute of Technology Patna and international platforms will be utilised to improve the stability and resilience of this strategically important highway.
