Remarks reportedly made by Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud during a Supreme Court hearing triggered widespread online debate after references comparing certain unemployed youths to “cockroaches” went viral. The Chief Justice later clarified that his comments were misquoted and were directed at individuals allegedly using fake degrees, not at India’s youth.
The controversy led to the emergence of the satirical digital movement called the “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP), launched by Abhijeet Dipke. The campaign popularised slogans such as #MainBhiCockroach and highlighted concerns relating to youth unemployment, exam paper leaks and frustrations over governance issues. The movement later extended into symbolic civic activism, including cleanliness drives along the Yamuna River.
