Former U.S. President Donald Trump defended Washington’s move against Venezuela — including the seizure of its president — by appealing to the Monroe Doctrine, a policy first framed in the early 1800s.

Under this doctrine, the United States claims that the Americas constitute its strategic backyard, and that any outside involvement — especially by European powers — would be viewed as an unfriendly intrusion and resisted accordingly.
