Karnataka has become the first Indian state to officially designate a state amphibian by recognising the endemic Malabar Tree Toad (Malenadina Mara Gantikappe) through an order issued by its Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment.

The species is notable for being the only toad in India adapted to an arboreal lifestyle, living primarily in tree canopies. The recognition highlights the importance of protecting India’s unique amphibian biodiversity.
