Assam’s Matcha Tea Milestone

• Assam has become the first state in India to commercially produce Matcha tea, with production beginning at the Chota Tingrai Tea Estate.
• The achievement follows a decade-long India–Japan collaboration, which introduced Japanese expertise, technology, and specialised machinery for Matcha production to Assam’s tea industry.
• The first commercial lot was auctioned at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre for ₹13,000, highlighting the growing market potential of premium specialty teas.
