Japan issued its highest emergency alert as Typhoon Shanshan barrels toward the southern island of Kyushu, with the very strong storm set to bring heavy rain before making landfall.
The storm is currently equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale.
Saffir-Simpson scale is a classification system used to measure the intensity of hurricanes based on their sustained wind speeds. Developed in the early 1970s by engineer Herbert Saffir and meteorologist Robert Simpson, the scale helps predict potential damage and flooding that a hurricane might cause
The name Shanshan has been used to name five tropical cyclones in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. The name was submitted by Hong Kong and it is commemorative to the first athlete, Lee Lai-shan, to win an Olympic medal representing Hong Kong
