Polity & Governance
The Supreme Court dismissed a petition against the Karnataka government’s decision to invite Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq, a Muslim, to inaugurate the Mysuru Dasara festivities. The Court emphasized that the Preamble enshrines secularism, liberty of thought and faith, equality, and fraternity as fundamental ideals of the Constitution.
Article 25 guarantees freedom of religion while permitting the State to regulate secular activities linked to religious practice. In R.C. Poudyal (1993), the Court clarified that secularism requires equal treatment of all religions without discrimination. More recently, in Dr. Balram Singh v. Union of India (2024), it held that secularism empowers the State to intervene and eliminate practices that obstruct equality and development.
