The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) explored the possibility of blending isobutanol with diesel after earlier attempts with ethanol proved unsuccessful.
Isobutanol is a higher molecular weight alcohol with inflammable properties, commonly used as a solvent in industries like painting. It can be produced through thermochemical pathways such as converting synthesis gas into mixed alcohols, or through biochemical pathways involving fermentation by specially engineered microbes under sterile conditions.
