Padmanath Gohain Baruah, born in the Lakhimpur district of Assam , was a noted litterateur and an important cultural figure in Assam during the freedom struggle.

He was the first President of Asom Sahitya Sabha held in 1917 and campaigned against the use of opium. In the meeting of Assam Association in 1919, he condemned the consumption of opium by youth and the older people. He was influenced by the self-reliance agenda of the Swadeshi Movement. He wrote extensively in favour of the Swadeshi movement in Assam Banti. Simultaneously, the columns against the divisive politics of Lord Curzon were also criticised by him. Due to his appeal, the Assam Association and the Jorhat Sarvajanik Sabha took up the task of seriously disseminating information and awareness about the Swadeshi movement in the region.

Throughout the period of his life, Gohain was actively involved in the freedom struggle until his demise in 1946.
