Economy & Energy

The Centre is preparing to partially open the civil nuclear power sector—long reserved for state control under the Atomic Energy Act, 1962—to private participation. The move aims to close a $26-billion funding gap, push Fleet Mode construction, and accelerate the rollout of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

Private entry is also expected to boost high-precision domestic manufacturing for reactor components and help reduce nuclear tariffs to ₹4–5 per unit by improving efficiency and lowering delays.

MCQ:
Why is private participation being considered in the nuclear sector?
A) Excess nuclear capacity
B) Need for investment and faster deployment
C) Decline in renewable energy
D) Surplus uranium reserves
