India will soon establish the National Coral Reef Research Institute (NCRRI) in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, with an estimated outlay of ₹120 crore.
Planned as the country’s nodal and monitoring agency for coral reef science, NCRRI will coordinate nationwide research, support conservation strategies, and strengthen ecosystem monitoring across India’s reef-rich regions such as A&N Islands, Lakshadweep, Gulf of Mannar, and Gulf of Kachchh. The institute is expected to provide advanced scientific capacity for reef restoration, climate resilience studies, and national policy support.
