The year 2025 marks the centenary of the Kakori Train Robbery, a landmark event in India’s freedom struggle. On 9 August 1925, members of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) stopped a train between Saharanpur and Lucknow to seize British government treasury funds. The act was intended not merely as a robbery but as a symbolic blow against colonial exploitation and a means to finance revolutionary activities.
The centenary invites reflection on its legacy—how it demonstrated the courage, organisational skill, and ideological clarity of early revolutionaries. Though many leaders were captured and punished, the incident inspired future revolutionaries. Within three years, the movement evolved into the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) under leaders like Bhagat Singh, embracing a broader revolutionary socialist vision.
A hundred years later, the Kakori action remains a reminder of the sacrifices made by young revolutionaries and their belief that freedom required not just protest, but decisive action.
