Over two dozen pilot whales were found stranded and dead on New Zealand’s remote Twilight Beach, leading to a Maori-led recovery operation and the imposition of a rahui — a traditional spiritual closure to honour the dead animals and protect the area.

Pilot whales, belonging to the genus Globicephala, are large oceanic dolphins known for their deep social bonds and herding behaviour, which often results in mass strandings.

There are two species: the Short-finned Pilot Whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) and the Long-finned Pilot Whale (Globicephala melas), both belonging to the Delphinidae family.
